I have just signed the Time To Change, "Don't Get Me Wrong" campaign for 2010. I think this campaign is very important for those that have Mental Health Difficulties. As a person that suffers from the stigma of Mental Health myself, I think it's a very good campaign. There are far too many people in Britain today, that are still not being listened to. We are being totally ignored by the state. And society is also excludng us from proper social lifestyles.
Some think that Mental illness is a myth. It is not! One person in every four people has a Mental Health difficulty. We are left alone and isolated, in the communities in which we live. The government has ignored us for far too long. It's time for action now, not when it is too late.
One person in every six will have depression, at some point in their lives. One person in every 100 will end up with bipolar, or schizophrenia. Sometimes schizophrenia will also manifest itself as Asperger's, and this is misdiagnosed by Psychiatrists. These people do not know anything about Autistic Spectrum Disorders. Therefore, they should be struck-off the Medical Council, for not diagnosing Asperger's properly.
A guy called Erik took part in a experiment. He placed an ad on the net for a girlfriend. It recieved 81% less feedback, after he revealed that he had a Mental Health Difficulty. In otherwords, he was totally ignored by potential friends, just because he didn't think, or look like anybody else. This is sheer prejudice from society. It should not be allowed 2 spread like a disease. We are all very different. Why should we all be the same? Isn't this inequality? What happened 2 Equal Rights for the disabled?
Personally, I am rather disgusted by the so-called modern world, in which we live in today. If you'd like more information, then please go to http://www.time-to-change.org.uk/ Or you can contact Mind at contact@mind.org.uk Also they have a address Mind 15-19 Broadway Stratford London E15 4BQ UK.
